On 15 March 1945, in Germany, Tec. 5 Romero, then Private First Class, while under heavy small arms and machine gun fire, did, at the risk to his own life, evacuate five wounded men across a 500-yard open field. For three hours he crept through heavy fire, silenced snipers, and brought his comrades to cover of woods from where they were successfully evacuated. He entered military service from Elton, Louisiana.
